Fund Raisin' Star Wars Action!

All right guys, I know that 'Fund Raising' are 2 of the most hated words in the English language, so I chose 2 better ones to smooth it over 'Star Wars.' We will be watching Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope on Wednesday, January 9th at 7:00 PM while doing the fund raiser project.

This is really important for Quark especially because at the moment the current funding for it is $0.00. With this we'll have some money to use for activities and events (to pay for things like food). What we will be doing is making handwritten copies of letters expressing appreciation to people that have donated to BYU. These letters have already been written (typed) by members of Quark, but we need to handwrite 10 copies of each one. We have 6 letters to make copies of meaning we need to make 60 total copies. Each letter written gets $5 for Quark meaning we can get $300 from this activity. So we need people to come and write some letters while watching the timeless classic of Star Wars: A New Hope.

When: Weds. January 9th, 7:00 PM (First week of winter semester. Note: There will be no film forum that week)
Where: Baggins' Apartment (See comments)
What: Watching Star Wars and Writing Letters
Why: Money for Quark

Marshmallow Wars gun creation

We're getting together in the Fishbowl at Benson at 6:30 on Wednesday to make our Marshmallow guns. Everyone who wants to make a gun should bring $2 for pistols and $3 for assault rifles. We're hoping to make enough to play on Saturday at the BBQ. We'll have a lot of fun with these in future events as well. We'll be leaving by 6:45 to go purchase the pipe and going back to the Benson to make the guns. See you all there.

Addendum:

Making the rifles went rather well but we need to meet again to finish up work on them. All we really need is possibly get
some more pipe cutters and make sure our drills have charge in the batteries. Lets meet again at the fishbowl on Friday
at 6:30 to finish up.

Today 6:30 @ Fishbowl, Benson Building

Spring Barbecue! - Saturday May 10th

It's time for the spring barbecue! On Saturday May 10th, starting at 12:00 PM, we'll be having a barbecue at Kiwanis Park (directions to be posted later). It should be a fun time to socialize, and if it's anything like last year, see what strange marinades people have come up with. This is a BYOB event: Bring Your Own Beef. It's also requested that you bring something to share, like drinks, chips, or condiments. To help coordinate who's bringing what, please post what you intend to bring in the comments of this announcement so we don't end up with 30 liters of soda and no chips, or vice-versa. Please come even if you can't bring something though. Also, we should make sure to have a few Frisbees and soccer balls on hand.

Directions are here

Game ideas for closing social

Last year we played a game of Jeopardy on the closing social. We would like to play a different game this time, and we are looking for game ideas.

Here's one:

Game is called "What? Where? When?" and guess what, it originated in Sovietrussia. It's not unlike Jeopardy, but there are many differences.

Rules:

All players are split into teams of 6 (no fewer than 3, no more than 6).

The GM then asks riddle-type questions. All teams have one minute to discuss the question among them and write an answer on a piece of paper, which is submitted.

Whichever team answered the most questions correctly wins. That's it!

The trick is question structure. Every question can be answered in two ways: you either know the answer, or you guess it from the structure and wording of the question. The answers are most often very logical, but quite unexpected. Additionally, our questions will be Sci-Fi and Fantasy themed. Here's an example:

A quote from British humor sci-fi author Douglas Adams:

"You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in
a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of
asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my
mother told me when I was young."
[Ford Prefect:] "Why, what did she tell you?"
[Arthur:] <>

Question: What did Arthur say?

Post your feedback, your game ideas, response to the example question in comments.

Closing Social - April 11th

Quark's Closing Social for this semester will be held on Friday April 11th at 7:00 PM. The room is W111 in the Benson building, the same place where last year's closing social was held. The elections will begin at 8:00 PM, with some games and activities before and after.

We haven't gotten many submissions for the talent show yet. If you have anything you'd like to present, please make sure to PM Xirax so we know about it. Submissions can really be anything; the idea is just to have a good time.

Food will be potluck as usual. Officers are bringing drinks; everyone else is encouraged to bring snacks or some other type of food to share.

Added by Baggins: If there is anyone who has access to wireless Gamecube controllers (a la the Wavebird), PLEASE let me know, and please bring them to the social!

Dance Postponed

The dance that was supposed to happen this Friday will be postponed until January. Sorry about that...we'll make sure to get a better jump on the scheduling this time.

Quark Dance - January 18th

After some scheduling problems the first time....here we go again! On Friday January 18th, from 7:00-10:00 PM, we'll be having our annual Quark Dance. This will be in WSC 3228 (one of the dance rooms upstairs). This has been a lot of fun in the past, so we hope we get a good turnout.

A dance? Quark? Some of you are probably asking if we're insane. The answer is: probably. But in all seriousness, this isn't your normal dance. We'll have a lot of different music there, a couple games on the side for when you want to take a break, and overall it's a really fun atmosphere. Ask someone who went last year if you need help deciding to come.

As usual, food is potluck. Officers are bringing drinks. Everyone else should please bring some type of food to share.

Please note the change in location. There's apparently an awards banquet going on downstairs that was booked before we were, and something screwed up in the computer so it let us register the ballroom even though we shouldn't have been able to.

Lan Party - Team Fortress 2 -November 17th

There will be a Lan Party on November 17th (this Saturday) from 1-6 PM. It will be held in room 206 of the JRCB (Law Building). This is fairly close to the ground floor entrance, so should make transportation nice and easy for those of us who are hauling desktops around.

The main event is Team Fortresss 2. We may play different games near the end (bring Unreal Tournament and Warcraft 3 if you have them), but TF2 will be the star attraction. Yes, everyone needs to either have their own copy, or borrow a friend's copy. There's no way to have one person's copy run on multiple machines at the same time. The game 'should' hopefully be accessible via the internet to people who aren't actually there. This still needs to be tested.

Everyone who's coming should bring a network cable (preferably a long one) if they need to be hard-wired in. We should have a wireless router available, so if you can use that, great. Also remember to bring power strips if you have one, and an extension cord or three would also not be a bad idea. Hope to see you there!

Halloween Party - October 26th

We'll be having a Halloween Party on Friday October 26th from 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM. We'll be in in the FLAC (Foreign Language Activity Center) again, in the basement of the JFSB. Everyone come and bring your friends! Costumes are encouraged but not required. As with the opening social, everyone please bring some kind of food to share if you can.

We'll be watching The Nightmare Before Christmas in the auditorium across the hall (B002), and the FLAC will feature games and food. If you'd like to bring a game, please refer to this thread to sign up. We're looking for horror/mystery themed games, or whatever else would work well with Halloween.

Please remember that costumes must comply with BYU rules. This mainly means no masks and no weapons. (Props are fine, real weapons are not)

Opening Social

Our opening social for this school year will be held on Friday September 28th, starting at 7:00 PM. We managed to get the Foreign Language Activty Center again; it's right across from B002 in the JFSB, where we had the film forum over spring/summer. We also did last year's Halloween party in the FLAC.

There will be food, games, movies, and even a drawing for cool prizes! The drawing will take place at 8:00 PM. We do ask that everyone help provide the food though; please try to bring something to share. Also bring any particular game you want to be able to play. We'll have a Wii setup in addition to the physical games.
