Film Forum for May 14, 2008

This week's film forum will be Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, an anime from 1990. The series follows an young inventor named Jean and a dark-skinned former circus performer named Nadia. This anime is loosely based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.

Film Forum - Kiki's Delivery Service

This week's film forum will be a screening of the film, Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). It'll be in our usual room, B002 JFSB, on April 7th at 7:00pm. By request, we'll be watching it in Japanese with subtitles so some people can get extra credit for their class.

Plot Synopsis: Kiki, a young witch-in-training, has reached the age of 13. According to tradition, all witches of that age must leave home for one year, so that they can learn how to live on their own. Kiki, along with her talking cat Gigi, fly away to live in the seaside town of Korico. After starting her own delivery service (using her broom as the delivery vehicle), Kiki must learn how to deal with her new life, especially after she loses the power to fly.

Film Forum - Stalker

Update: We did end up watching Doctor Who this last week, so Stalker is on it's regularly scheduled time.

This week's film forum will be a screening of the film, Stalker (1979). It'll be in our usual room, B002 JFSB, on April 2nd at 7:00pm.

Plot Synopsis: Near a gray and unnamed city is the Zone, an alien place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers. Over his wife's numerous objections, a man rises in the dead of night: he's a stalker, one of a handful who have the mental gifts (and who risk imprisonment) to lead people into the Zone to the Room, a place where one's secret hopes come true. That night, he takes two people into the Zone: a popular writer who is burned out, cynical, and questioning his genius; and a quiet scientist more concerned about his knapsack than the journey. In the deserted Zone, the approach to the Room must be indirect. As they draw near, the rules seem to change and the stalker faces a crisis.

Film Forum - Soylent Green

This week's film forum will be a screening of the academy-award winning film, Soylent Green (1973). It'll be in our usual room, B002 JFSB, on March 20th at 7:00pm.

Plot Synopsis: The year is 2022. New York City has become overpopulated with 40 million people and pollution has caused the temperature to be risen and all natural resources have been destroyed, leaving 40 million people starving. The Soylent Company has create a new food product, Soylent Green. In the overpopulated and polluted New York City, police detective Thorn is assigned to investigate the brutal murder of an corporate official of the Soylent company, William R. Simonson. Thorn's investigation into Simonson's murder leads him to uncover a conspiracy in the Soylent company and the Soylent Green food product itself, where Thorn uncovers the horrible truth about Soylent Green.

Film Forum - .hack//SIGN

This week's film forum will be a screening the first several episodes of .hack//SIGN (2002). It'll be in our usual room, B002 JFSB, on March 12th at 7:00pm.

Plot Summary: The extremely popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing game, "The World," allows people to escape into a fantasy realm of adventure. One player, Tsukasa, however, has found that he can no longer log off The World and is trapped physically inside. Attracted to Tsukasa, other players begin to investigate this mysterious event; some persue him as a hacker, while others befriend him. When Tsukasa discovers secrets in The World, however, the true nature of The World begins to unfold.

Film Forum - TMNT

This week's film forum will be a screening of TMNT (2007). It'll be in our usual room, B002 JFSB, on March 5th at 7:00pm.

Rating: PG for animated action violence, some scary cartoon images and mild language.

Plot Summary: After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, The Shredder, the Turtles are needed more than ever, but Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo have become lost and direction less. Leonardo has gone to Central America, on the orders of the martial arts master and father figure Master Splinter, for training. Donatello and Michelangelo have started small businesses in Leonardo's absence. Meanwhile, strange things are happening in New York City. An army of ancient creatures threatens to take over the world and the Turtles must unite again to save it.

Film Forum Change - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Due to being unable to obtain a theatrical release version of The Chronicles of Riddick, we will instead be screening Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990). It will be shown this Wednesday, February 27th at 7:00pm in our usual room, B002 JFSB.

Rating: PG

Plot Summary: Through contact with a mysterious substance, called Ooze, 4 little turtles in the canalization of New York mutate to giant turtles. They can speak, walk upright and love pizza. The wise rat Splinter becomes their mentor and educates them to Ninja fighters. Their arch-enemy is the bad, bad guy Shredder, who struggles to gain power over the world. Of course the ninja turtles will do everything to stop him.

Note: If anyone has a copy of theatrical release of The Chronicles of Riddick, NOT the unrated (or edited) version, please send a PM to Squeeself on the forums. We will try to watch it in a couple weeks if we can get a rated version.

Film Forum - The Sword in the Stone

Plot Summary:

Arthur (aka Wart) is a young boy who aspires to be a knight's squire. On a hunting trip he falls in on Merlin, a powerful but amnesiac wizard who has plans for Wart beyond mere squiredom. He starts by trying to give Wart an education (whatever that is), believing that once one has an education, one can go anywhere. Needless to say, it doesn't quite work out that way.

Film Forum - Stardust

This week's film forum will be a screening of Stardust (2007). It'll be in our usual room, B002 JFSB, on February 13th at 7:00pm.

Rating: Rated PG-13 for some fantasy violence and risque humor.

Plot Summary:

"Stardust," based on the best-selling graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, takes audiences on an adventure that begins in a village in England and ends up in places that exist in an imaginary world. A young man named Tristan (Charlie Cox) tries to win the heart of Victoria (Sienna Miller), the beautiful but cold object of his desire, by going on a quest to retrieve a fallen star. His journey takes him to a mysterious and forbidden land beyond the walls of his village. On his odyssey, Tristan finds the star, which has transformed into a striking girl named Yvaine (Claire Danes).

However, Tristan is not the only one seeking the star. A king's (Peter O'Toole) four living sons - not to mention the ghosts of their three dead brothers - all need the star as they vie for the throne. Tristan must also overcome the evil witch, Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer), who needs the star to make her young again. As Tristan battles to survive these threats, encountering a pirate named Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro) and a shady trader named Ferdy the Fence (Ricky Gervais) along the way, his quest changes. He must now win the heart of the star for himself as he discovers the meaning of true love.

Film Forum - Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

This week's film forum will be a screening of the first several episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (2000). It'll be in our usual room, B002 JFSB, on February 6th at 7:00pm.

Plot Summary:

In the year After Colony 195, Earth is surrounded by orbiting space colonies. The colonists are cruelly oppressed by the Earth Sphere Alliance, which uses huge humanoid fighting machines called "Mobile Suits" to control the populace. Behind this tyranny is the secret society called "Oz," which has infiltrated the Alliance military and steered it towards its repressive course. Now, the space colonies are ready to strike back. Five young pilots, equipped with advanced mobile suits called "Gundams," are sent to Earth to wage guerilla war against Oz and its Alliance puppets. The war to decide humanity's destiny begins...
